CHARACTERS

DEAF-MOTHER/DEAF-WOMAN

In the stories, she is the very first Deaf person to exist. After a long journey, she finds DEAF-MAN and marries him.

She is the spiritual heart of the family, insisting that God make more Deaf in the world.

She represents the 'mother of all Deaf', an origin point for all of Deaf people.

DEAF-FATHER/DEAF-MAN

In the stories, he is the second Deaf person to exist, and DEAF-WOMAN's husband.

He is the 'father of all Deaf'.

He represents the leaders and families of Deafhood.

TWINS: BLIND-DEAF AND SIGHT-DEAF

The first of the Deaf children, they were born conjoined and decide to separate as adults.

BLIND-DEAF teaches the tactile language and hides children of Deaf from oralists.

They represent the DeafBlind, safety of Deaf children, and the ways Deaf have survived oppression and oralism.

SIGHT-DEAF teaches the written language and resists oralists who would hurt Deaf children.

They represent the sighted Deaf, advocacy of Deaf, and preservation of Deaf culture.

Together they represent Deaf wisdom, knowledge, and the enlightenment of Deaf culture.

HARD-HEARING

The third of the Deaf children. In the stories they worry about not being "deaf enough" like their older siblings.

Along with CODA and LATE-DEAF, they form one of the three 'links' that connect the family to hearing people.

They represent Deaf who are hard of hearing or deaf in one ear.

CODA

The fourth of the Deaf children. In the stories, they leave home on a journey to see what hearing people are like.

They come home with many stories and interesting things.

Along with HARD-HEARING and LATE-DEAF, they form one of the three 'links' that connect the family to hearing people.

They represent the hearing children of Deaf families who were raised Deaf.

LATE-DEAF

The fifth of the Deaf children. In the stories they run away from home for a while, but return after growing up.

They have trouble communicating, but they are good at heart.

Along with HARD-HEARING and CODA, they form one of the three 'links' that connect the family to hearing people.

They represent Deaf who became physically deaf later in life.

LITTLE-DEAF

The sixth and youngest of the Deaf children.

In the stories they are almost taken away by the monster BLANK-FACE, but rescued by their siblings and clever thinking.

They represent Deaf children, the Deaf who were born and raised by hearing families, and the hope of all Deaf for the future.

HEARING-MAN

In the stories, he is the first husband of DEAF-WOMAN. He takes in LATE-DEAF when they run away from home.

He doesn't like sign language, exaggerates his talking to Deaf, and is ignorant of all Deaf things.

However, he is good to hearing people.

He represents hearing people who are ignorant of Deaf and Deafhood.

INTERPRETER

In the stories, they are the second husband of DEAF-WOMAN. They tell LATE-DEAF to go back when they run away from home.

When CODA was on their journey, INTERPRETER helped teach them the hearing language.

They can sign, and often translate for nearby Deaf, but they don't always understand Deaf people at heart.

They represent the hearing people who connect with the Deaf.

BLANK-FACE

In the stories, it is the monster of oralism that steals away Deaf children.

It likes to collect hands of Deaf, and wears them as a cloak.

It nearly took LITTLE-DEAF, but was outwitted by them and the other Deaf children, who distracted it with wooden hands.

BLIND-DEAF hides children from its gaze, and SIGHT-DEAF often fights it.
